Why wear SPF?
I get a lot of patients coming for treatments who don't wear a sun protector factor cream. If you are spending hundreds of pounds on your aesthetic treatments then you need to invest in a SPF. Not just any SPF at that, but a medical grade SPF. Why a medical grade one I hear you ask? Well over the counter products do not contain the medical ingredients that will give you full SPF cover. Here’s a short guide on SPFs.
Why wear SPF?
Did you know that 80% of the ageing process is due to sun damage? The other 20% is due to smoking, environment etc. Sun damage is due to UVA, UVB and infrared rays. A good quality SPF will give you full protection.
Which factor should I buy?
The higher the SPF the better. We advocate 30-50, ideally a 50.
What is the difference between a chemical and physical sunscreen?
A physical sunscreen sits on top of the skin and block the sun’s rays by deflecting the rays (like a mirror). They should contain titanium dioxide and zinc oxide.
Chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays and convert them to heat before they penetrate the skin. They should contain oxybenzone and octinoxate.
When should I wear a SPF?
You should wear a SPF every single day - even in winter and when in the house (UV rays can penetrate through glass).
In the morning, following your daily skin skin regime, apply your make up then apply your SPF . Ideally it should be applied 15 minutes before you leave the house.
